Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)
Children who are born with abnormally large ears, or ears which stick out far from the sides of the head, are often the subject of cruel and unnecessary teasing amongst their peers. This teasing often affects these kids for the rest of their lives. To improve the appearance of a person’s ears, Otoplasty is often suggested. Otoplasty can be performed on children as young as five in many cases and is often believed that the younger the procedure is performed, the better, though many adults have benefited from this procedure as well.
Otoplasty can also be performed to improve stretched out earlobes, lobes with creases and wrinkles and other ear abnormalities. The Otoplasty procedure generally lasts two to three hours and may be performed in a hospital, office-based facility, or outpatient surgery center under general or local anesthesia. As with any surgery, there are risks and Otoplasty may not be right for everyone. To find out if Otoplasty is right for you or your child, a consultation with a Plastic Surgeon is needed.
