It started a few months ago, when a fashion publicist friend revealed that she had her breasts enlarged as a teenager. We’ve known each other for nearly three years, and I never noticed her cup size, or thought that it may have been surgically enhanced. A beautiful, effortless, native New Yorker, she just doesn’t look like the “boob job” type.

For some reason, breast augmentation still carries a stigma, especially in the fashion world. As my publicist friend told me after finally admitting that she’d had hers done, “Half the battle is hiding them forever.” That sounds ominous, but once I learned that breast implants could actually pass, as hers do, I couldn’t stop thinking about them.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the benefits of being curve-free — running for miles without back pain, going braless, having people look me in the eye — you get the idea. But I’m still preoccupied by this equation that Cat once wrote about, “a terrible little math problem multiplying and dividing forever in your head that equates rather exactingly your own hotness with the rest of the world’s ability to love you.” I calculate my cup size and it disrupts the sum…

Currently, people are starting to request these butts from plastic surgeons. Recent studies from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery show that Americans spent over $31 million on buttock augmentation surgeries in 2010. That is a 40 percent increase from 2009.  This trend coincides with the recent rise to fame of Kim Kardashian and the comeback of Jennifer Lopez.  People are also requesting buttock shapes similar to Salma Hayek, and, more recently, Pippa Middleton.

If it is one thing that plastic surgeons suggest when deciding size and shape it is to consider proportions.  The type of buttock augmentation should depend on your body type. Make sure to consult with your surgeon about what would look best with your body, instead of just the behind you want to emulate.

Also, choose your surgeon carefully and do not try to take shortcuts.  If a procedure sounds fishy, it probably is.  Recently, a woman in Florida charged people $700 for buttock injections. She claimed that these injections would give the extra boost that women want.  What was in these injections? Fix-A-Flat, a tire inflator and sealant.

In another disturbing story, a Colombian couple gave “buttock augmentations” in the back of a tile shop resulting in the death of one. They are both serving jail sentences.

Reese’s view on plastic surgery is one that many people share.  Everybody is entitled to do how they please, and if it makes them happy, then why not? Everyone has their insecurities whether it be physical appearance or not.  Some people choose to enhance their breasts with a new bra. Other people take a different route with surgery.

All in all, it’s personal choice and we all have our opinions. And just because you may not want it now, doesn’t mean you won’t have a change of heart in the future. Like Reese says, “I don’t think I need plastic surgery at this point: Can we just go day-by-day on that one?”

But don’t let a simple failed New Year’s resolution get you down! Statistics show that only 8% actually succeed in their resolution. That makes you a part of 92% that don’t make it. You may ask yourself why that number is so high, but the real question lies in why do we make resolutions at all? Do we set ourselves up for failure? Or do we honestly believe that we are going to follow through and be happy with our selves?

Most resolutions are made to make us feel better about who we are. We get it stuck in our stubborn minds that simply making a resolution will make it come true. We plan our workouts, eating habits, and daily routines around what we want to be. Our fridge is stocked with celery, our nicotine patch pressed on our arms as our feet hit the treadmill. It all seems easy until…it gets hard. The workouts take up too much time, the need for a cigarette is just too daunting, and healthy food doesn’t satisfy those cravings. Suddenly we lose sight of what we wanted because it is so much easier to stay who we are rather than to make those changes.

But all in all, as the days go on, we’ll revisit our past ambitions. Your mind will be abuzz with all the good ideas that you had before but now think they’re new again. The unhealthy food will be thrown away, new gym attire will fill your closet and your heart will be consumed with all the right intentions. And when this time comes around, do something new. Become one of the 8%. No one ever said it had to be a new year in order to make a change. All we need is a day. So make your new day’s resolution and stick to it because you deserve it. Nobody said it was easy, just worth it.
